Society in the 1920's
The 1920’s was a very exciting era for Americans. People could now afford to enjoy themselves and spend money on things they would never have dreamed of before. Most people were happy the war was over and were ready to celebrate, entertainment businesses such as movie halls sprouted up. A new style for young women came about when jazz became popular, ‘flapper’ was a common term referring to women who wore short, revealing dresses and bobbed their hair. Everyone was enjoying themselves as the era changed. Everyone had a job, the economy was booming and everyone was investing in stocks and buying on margin. The automobile is also becoming popular, and when Henry Ford invents the assembly line, a much more efficient way of producing vehicles, most people are now buying transportation. Radios are also extremely popular, with one in every household. Women finally gain the right to vote, this is a huge boost to their power and they soon vote in Prohibition, which is the law that makes all alcohol illegal in the United States. Although, where there is a will, there is a drink, and men like Al Capone form mobs and begin rum running, or bootlegging, which is the illegal transportation and sale of alcohol. The 1920’s are a historically happy time for the people in America, soon though, all their worlds will be crushed when the stock market collapses.
